Hands meet, unaware I hold. Mine once, I watch from a distance as it leaves. Unattached. Alongside, I walk. Fingers stretch. Close around hers. Eyes shut, I can’t feel it anymore. New allegiance formed. Marching to unknown steps. Looking forward, I continue. Numbing ignored. Phantom pain where it should be. Squeezes once, two, three times. I watch it happen. Can’t move. She walks away, my hand with her. I should’ve let go. Unable to return, I watch. People stare. A ring is placed. Mouth creates a smile. I’ve been caged.
